Wootten Springs Cemetery dates back to 1871, before Texarkana was officially a town. The springs, now part of Texarkana’s Spring Lake Park, had long been a stopping place for travelers.  Caddo Indians, who had major villages to the north on the Red River, used the site for centuries, and the springs may have even seen the remnants of the De Soto Expedition in 1842 (the route of this group, led by Luis de Moscoso following the death of De Soto, is very uncertain and much debated, but the Moscoso group did likely travel through the general area,)  Although maps of Trammel’s Trace show this route a little over a mile to the northwest, many Trace travelers likely stopped or overnighted at the springs. The 1871 “Union” church at this site, and the original sponsor of the cemetery, was founded by a group of Baptists and Methodists who had recently come to the area from Arkansas.  The earliest known burial in the cemetery was in 1875.  For more information on the cemetery see the following website: (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txkusa/Cemeteries/woottenspringschandcem.html), and a cemetery census is available at https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2401514/memorial-search:
